Day 2 of the @LabourFilmFest has been a cracker. Kinky Boots & Silent Running #LabourFilmFest

Well Day 2 was really good.  Kinky Boots is a fucking joy of a film. I’m not sure how I’ve never heard of this before as it came out in 2005.  It follows the story of a shoemaker as he tries to save his family business.  A chance meeting with drag queen Lola whilst on a visit to London leads to a transformation back at his Northampton factory and some social transformations thrown in along the way.  I loved this.  I’m buying it.  It’s got some very funny moments and it’s life affirming in all its diverse glory.  And it’s based on a real shoe factory in Northampton.

Before we got on to Silent Running which is basically a film about a mad, murderous hippy and some cute robots saving the forests… in space (awesome) we had a little live music.  This was covers of songs featured in the movie and was a pleasant interlude.  There was then a small talk by Labour Party Euro candidate Lucy Anderson who told us to vote but not who for (I’m guessing this is because they can’t promote one party without inviting the others during the election campaign or maybe she just assumed how we’d all be voting). I’m writing Class War on my ballot paper and the Labour Party can fuck off up it’s own neoliberal arse but anyway…  There was also a short film highlighting the process of growing trees for the wood industry which was a really good intro to Cute Robots and Mad Hippies in Space.

All in all a really fun evening.  There’s still 3 days left and tickets are available.  The rest of the programme is well worth a look.
