Trade union education is under threat at Lewisham and Southwark College. This college is one of the only places in South London where trade union activists can get training and education via TUC courses. I attended the college myself a couple of years ago to complete a diploma in Trade Union Equality. From that I started to explore other education opportunities and as a result ended up on my current MA.
The college itself is a haven for young people in the area. It provides education, much of which is vocational, to thousands of people in some of the most deprived areas of London. There is a risk that in cutting these courses the college is merely at the start of a programme of reductions. Along with trade union courses the college is also cutting courses in Engineering and Hairdressing.
