Croydon Guardian staff are on strike for two weeks. Support them!
Newsquest runs several titles across London (including the Croydon Guardian). It has announced cuts of £160,000 and to make this happen will be making senior editorial staff redundant, merging the south west London and south east London editorial departments, closing the Petts Wood office and asking the reporters based there to work remotely.
Whilst saying they want to invest in their web coverage they are getting rid of senior staff. These titles are already staffed very tightly and news reporting is never a simple 9-5 job. When you browse the titles under threat from these proposals it’s amazing to see what NUJ members are achieving in such a hostile business.
Newsquest has even refused to carry out a risk assessment on the proposals until after they are in place, even though they will drastically increase the pressure on the staff who get to stay. A two week strike is a daring and serous strategy. Those that undertake it deserve our respect and support.
